AUTOMOTIVE AIR CONDITIONING

TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE

OVERVIEW

To successfully repair an automotive air conditioning system there are several "caveats". First, any new or remanufactured parts must be installed in a clean, leak free system. It does you no good to introduce new or remanufactured parts into a system contaminated with debris from a previous part failure. A system with leaks will lose oil and eventually cause compressor failure due to improper lubrication.

Where does the debris come from? When a compressor fails, internal components can grind themselves into a sludge like paste of metal shavings and burned oil. This gritty substance will impede the systems flow of oil and cause damage to the new compressor courtesy of the grit and metal shavings.

Other sources of debris are the drier or accumulator and the interior surface of hoses. Occasionally, the desiccant bag or compartment in the drier will deteriorate to the point that the desiccant will travel through the system and prevent the return of oil to the compressor. In this instance the contaminants usually resemble a brown, sand like substance but can sometimes look like BB's rolling around in the hoses. Sometimes, heat, time and the acids formed from moisture in the system will cause the interior surface of the system hoses to deteriorate also. This will introduce a black, gummy sludge, or small flakes of rubber into the system, the effect of which is catastrophic. The solution for all of this is to flush the system with a chemical solvent to remove the contaminants.\\\\\\\\\\\
